Moving During Winter in Ontario

Clear paths, watch the weather and protect cold-sensitive items for a safer winter move.

Winter moves are slower, so plan for it

A winter move in Ontario is the same work as any other move, done in colder air, on slippery ground and in shorter daylight. Each of those makes the job slower and riskier, and on an hourly local move, slower means more billed time. Planning for the conditions is the best way to keep the day safe and on schedule.

This guide is about preparation. It does not quote seasonal prices: FleetGo publishes one set of rates, listed on the pricing page.

Clear the path at both ends

  • Shovel and salt the driveway, walkways, steps and the area where the truck will park, the evening before and again in the morning.
  • Ask the destination owner, landlord or property manager to do the same.
  • Make sure the truck has a cleared space close to the door. Snowbanks can turn a short carry into a long one.
  • Lay down mats or cardboard inside entrances to protect floors from wet boots.

Under FleetGo's terms, the customer is responsible for safe pathways and access. A crew may pause or decline a task that presents an unreasonable risk of injury or damage, and icy steps are one of the most common.

Watch the forecast

Check the forecast in the days before the move. Weather can reasonably affect arrival times, and severe storms can make driving unsafe. If a major storm is forecast, talk to FleetGo early about your options, and remember that changes or cancellations need at least 48 hours' notice.

Book a morning start in winter. Daylight ends early, and finishing in the light is safer for everyone carrying furniture on outdoor steps.

Protect items that do not like the cold

  • Electronics: original manufacturer packaging is strongly recommended for televisions, monitors and computers. Let electronics warm to room temperature before switching them on, to avoid condensation.
  • Liquids: anything that can freeze and burst, such as cleaning products, paint or drinks, should travel in your own car or be used up before the move.
  • Plants: plants are temperature-sensitive and travel at the customer's risk. Move them in your heated car.
  • Wood and leather furniture: blankets and wrapping help protect surfaces from moisture and scuffs.

Keep the heat on

Make sure heating and power are on at the new home before moving day, and keep the old home heated until the end. A front door left open for hours lets a lot of heat out; closing interior doors to rooms that are finished helps.

Set up a warm spot with hot drinks for the household. Keep children and pets away from the open door and the icy path. For more on families, see moving with children.

Condos and apartments in winter

Buildings often lay down extra protection in lobbies during winter to deal with slush. Ask management whether they need floor protection, how long the elevator booking is, and where the truck can stop. The condo elevator booking guide lists the questions to ask.
