Summer is the busiest moving season
School is out, leases turn over and closing dates cluster, so summer is when most households want to move. That has two practical effects: popular dates fill up first, and buildings are busier with other residents moving in and out on the same days.
This guide covers planning around that demand and around the heat. It does not quote seasonal prices: FleetGo publishes one set of rates on the pricing page, and the cost of a local move depends on the hours the job takes.
Book early for summer dates
Month-end dates, Fridays and Saturdays are the hardest to get in summer. If your date is fixed, book as soon as you know it, with your building's move rules in hand. A FleetGo booking is secured with a $100 non-refundable deposit, and changes or cancellations need at least 48 hours' notice, so confirm your date before paying.
If you have flexibility, a weekday or mid-month date gives you more choice of crew and start time. How far in advance to book movers covers the timing in more detail.
Reserve the building early too
Condo and apartment elevators are in high demand in summer, because many residents move around the same dates. Reserve the service elevator and loading area as early as the building allows, at both ends if both are buildings.
Under FleetGo's terms, the customer arranges elevator reservations, loading-dock access and parking, and waiting caused by an unavailable elevator is billable time. A booking window that leaves margin beyond the estimate is safer than one that matches it exactly.
Working in the heat
- Start early. Mornings are cooler, and an early start leaves room in the day for delays.
- Keep the air conditioning on at the new home if possible, and keep doors closed between trips where you can.
- Have cold water available for the household.
- Keep children and pets in a cool room away from the open door and the path to the truck.
Items that do not like the heat
- Food and perishables travel at the customer's risk, because a moving truck is not refrigerated. Carry a cooler in your own car.
- Candles, cosmetics, medication and anything that can melt should travel with you.
- Electronics: original manufacturer packaging is strongly recommended for televisions, monitors and computers, and they should not sit in a hot car for long.
- Plants travel at the customer's risk and do best in an air-conditioned car.
Traffic and timing
Summer weekends bring cottage traffic, events and road construction. On a local move the drive between addresses is billed time, so plan the route and avoid the busiest hours where you can.
