Long-Distance Moving Checklist Ontario

How moves over 100 km differ from local moves, and what to do at each stage.

How a long-distance move differs from a local one

A local FleetGo move is priced by the hour. Once a move goes beyond 100 km, that method stops working well, because the drive itself becomes a large part of the job and the crew may not return the same day. Moves over 100 km receive a manual flat-rate review instead of a standard hourly estimate, and additional terms can apply to longer moves, including travel, fuel or overnight arrangements when they are disclosed and accepted.

That difference changes how you should plan. You need more lead time, a firmer inventory, and a clearer idea of what happens at the destination. This checklist is organized around those needs.

Six to eight weeks before

  • Confirm your closing or lease dates at both ends, because a long-distance move is harder to move by a day.
  • Make a room-by-room inventory, including the basement, garage and storage areas.
  • Decide what is not worth moving. Every item adds to the load and the cost of the trip.
  • Request a quote with both full addresses so the flat-rate review starts with real information.
  • Ask the destination building, if there is one, about move hours, elevator booking and truck access.

Three to four weeks before

  • Book the move and pay the $100 non-refundable deposit once the date is firm.
  • Start packing rooms you use least.
  • Arrange utilities, internet and mail forwarding for the new address.
  • Plan how you, your family and any pets will travel, separately from the truck.
  • Keep important documents, medication, jewellery and valuables with you rather than in the truck.

The final week

  • Finish packing and close every box. Label each one with its destination room.
  • Empty, clean and defrost the fridge and freezer at least a day before.
  • Do not pack food, liquids or perishables for a long trip. Under the terms they travel at the customer's risk, because a moving truck is not refrigerated.
  • Pack a separate essentials bag with chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes and anything you need on the first night.
  • Confirm parking or truck access at the destination.
  • Give at least 48 hours' notice of any change to the date, addresses or inventory.

Electronics and fragile items

A long drive means more vibration and more hours in the truck. Original manufacturer packaging is strongly recommended for televisions, monitors and computers, and it matters more on a long move. Wrap fragile items individually, fill empty space in boxes so nothing shifts, and mark boxes that must stay upright.

Boxes you pack and seal yourself are your responsibility as to their contents; FleetGo is responsible for external handling. That is another reason to pack fragile items carefully or ask about packing services.

Moving day and delivery

On moving day the crew confirms the inventory before loading, and the agreement is signed before work begins. Make sure someone can be at the destination when the truck arrives, with keys and access ready. If the destination is a condo or apartment, the elevator and loading area should be reserved for the expected arrival time.

Check your belongings as they come off the truck. If anything is damaged, report it to FleetGo within 48 hours, with photos.

Documented Ontario routes

FleetGo has documented longer moves within Ontario, such as Toronto to Niagara Falls one-bedroom moves and a two-bedroom basement move from Brampton to Windsor. The long-distance moving page explains how those moves are quoted and planned.
